The article shows the state of preservation of sources and the state of research on the given topic. Against this background, the potential of the Polish Army in south–eastern Poland in 1939 was presented, constituting 20% of the potential of the Polish Army. The next part of the article is an analysis of military operations in the region until 16 September, and then the war preparations of the USSR and the course of aggression against Poland on the example of the actions of the Red Army in Lviv, Tarnopol and Stanisławów provinces and the Polish reaction to the aggression of the Soviet Union.
