The book deals with the Ukrainian national liberation movement in the 1930s–1950s and from the perspective of the contemporary social and political issues in Ukraine and in the world.
It focuses on the historiography and methodology matters of study of the OUN and the UPA and analyses the place of these organizations in the European anti-colonial resistance. Other issues discussed in the book are: the evolution of their ideology, strategy and tactics; their relations with neighboring nations during World War II; the forms and methods of extermination of the nationalist underground by the Soviet regime after the war; the complexity of the contemporary process of raising awareness about the meaning of OUN and UPA for the Ukrainian statehood; the reconstruction of the history of the insurgency movement in the regions and from the perspective of biography and folklore studies.
